MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND

PLAN TO ATTEND THE NEXT MEETING OF THE

TRAFFIC SAFETY COMMISSION

The Traffic Safety Commission chose to 'kick the can' down the road and referred our request for additional roads to be opened to ATV and UTV traffic to a sub-committee.  Although there have been very few (if any) incidents since the county roads were opened in 2022, we are still meeting resistance from this ADVISORY AD HOC commission.

An advisory ad hoc committee or commission has similar functions to a joint committee. However, unlike a joint committee, an ad hoc committee has no legal authority over the organization. Instead, it serves as a group of individuals who come together to discuss and solve problems within the organization. The purpose is to support the goals and objectives of the organization as an ad hoc committee member. Specifically their responsibilities are to:  a) Gather information quickly to make informed decisions on pertinent issues; b) Provide expert advice on their area of expertise; c) Provide a diverse set of perspectives when making decisions; and d) Create a clear path forward for the organization by helping them define their vision. So essentially, the ad hoc committee formed an ad hoc subcommittee.  Let's encourage these appointed committee members to serve the best interests of all in the county and recognize that it is just not possible to legislate poor choices made by some individuals.

The next time this committee meets is:

Columbia County Traffic Safety Commission  •  9:30 am Friday, August 9th

@ C.C. Law Enforcement Center, Portage, John Roche Room

Please join us to support the requests to open segments of county highways. Due to the timing of this meeting, any progress will be held up until September's Highway Committee meeting on the 1st Thursday of the month.

The CCAUE club has made 10 requests to the county to open segments of county highways.  They were discussed at the Traffic Safety Commission Meeting in May. This meeting is the first of three meetings that must vote to approve any new openings (TSC, Highway Committee, County Board). Though there will not be public input and the TSC meeting, a presence of enthusiast is important.

The 10 requests are to better connect communities to family, friends, food and fuel and are shown on the map. In the SW part of the county there are requests for parts of highway V, J, Q, and CS to provide adequate connections between the communities of West Point, Okee, Lodi, Harmony Grove, Tipperary, Dekorra and Poynette. In the NW, the request will allow better connection of the Portage area and Marquette County. In the NE, the requests will allow passage north /south across highway P.
